Nope, your syntax is wrong. What you have is not valid Swift. Swift is a lot more strict about types than other languages. You need to make sure you are getting a single Bool back, and you need to make sure that the line before the return is valid, or the compiler will get really confused.
You can use optional binding to make sure the return is valid:
func downloadFiles() -> Bool {
// do things
return!completed
}
In Swift, it is a common mistake to assume that you can just use
!completed
when in fact what you have is an incomplete expression that the compiler thinks is an assignment. Swift is very strict about types and you need to avoid any sort of mistakes like this.
Now, if you want to be really fancy, you can add a custom function:
func downloadFiles() -> Bool {
// do things
return!completed
}
func composed(completingBlock: () -> ()) {
// do things
completed = true
completingBlock()
}
Now, any function can just call that composed function and it will be happy:
composing {
// do things
completed = true
}
Swift also allows you to write the equivalent of this without the composed function:
composing {
// do things
completed = true
}
Swift has a feature called "composability" which is really powerful and I recommend you take the time to learn it. It allows you to write the equivalent of methods like bind that allow you to compose a function with a value and automatically create a function that calls the original function when the value is called.
The above is all assuming what you have above is the entire method. If you have multiple lines before the return, you need to be very careful with your syntax. The above is the safest and easiest way to do this, but I highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the language and the powerful tools it provides to help you write safer code.
